My story ‘Scotland’s Secret City’ wins Daily Telegraph Just Back travel competition

What lies beneath these streets?

I had some great news on Thursday when Jolyon Attwooll from the Daily Telegraph called to say my travel piece ‘Beneath Edinburgh’s Streets’ had been chosen as this week’s Just Back prize-winner.

I was published by the Telegraph for a piece on Llandudno, called the Great British Seaside, in 2009. This story went onto win the 2009 annual prize. You can read it here.

Last year I was travelling to Dundee for the launch of Dundee New Writers 5 when I decided I’d spend time in Edinburgh on the way back. It was a quiet Thursday morning, pre-festival. I’d fancied exploring Underground Edinburgh for years and finally got round to it.

I had a great time and now I’m determined to explore the ghost and literary tours also doing business in the city. I love Edinburgh. I got engaged to my wife in the city and I’ve spent many happy hours exploring – everywhere is reachable on foot, without being an athlete.

Anyway, you can read my piece, re-titled Scotland’s Secret City, here.
