Reading in the Jewellery Quarter

The Drop Forge, Jewellery Quarter

On November 29 I was invited to read to JQ Bookwormers.

It was a bitterly cold night but the welcome was warm and I enjoyed reading to the group. I read a travel piece I had published about Edinburgh in the Daily Telegraph and a piece about a British family holidaying in the former Yugoslavia. I also read a short piece called The Stage which was shortlisted in the recent Foyles/Negative press short story competition.

I will be reading The Stage at the 6/8 Kafe in Birmingham on January 30.

What was most rewarding about the JQ Bookwormers’ evening – as a writer – was sharing experiences and learning from the group afterwards. I love to write short stories but most of the group read novels. In fact more read poetry than short stories. It was also interesting to learn what the group was reading, with a wide spread of thrillers and crime perhaps dominating, followed by literary fiction.

Thanks again to Si Stokes for fixing this up.
