End of the Road is a crime story I had in mind for some years before I got round to writing it. Last year I entered the piece in the first GKBC international crime short story competition and was delighted to be placed as a runner-up.

The location of much of the story is a salt marsh on Anglesey and a place I’ve returned to time and again in my writing. In 1991 I wrote a maudlin poem – typical teenage work really, but I enjoyed it – which featured the lane and the chapel and the windswept hawthorns in this story.
My great grandfather is buried in the grounds of the chapel (pictured) and I’ve visited many times over the years. I was delighted to dig out my book of pencilled poems again recently and discover I’m still mining many of the themes that inspired my first teenaged attempts at poetry in my current short stories.
Landscape is important in my writing and the west coast of Wales has vivid memories.
